The Short Strokes on Immersive Audio
It’s not stereo “wider.” Immersive audio adds height + depth + movement so sound feels like a place, not a picture.
Dolby Atmos is the most common music format: it uses audio objects positioned in 3D, rendered differently for speakers vs headphones.
Sony 360 Reality Audio is another consumer-friendly immersive format, often optimized around headphone listening.
Ambisonics is a flexible, VR/installation-friendly soundfield approach that can be decoded to many speaker layouts.
The “best” format depends on your goal (release vs installation vs experience) and expected playback (headphones vs speakers).
Strong immersive mixes are still song-first: stems organized, clear arrangement, and intentional spatial choices—not gimmicks.
